Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory and itchy skin disease that is often associated with other allergic diseases, such as allergic bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. It is found mainly in childhood, although in some cases it may extend into adulthood.
The causes of atopic dermatitis are not clear. However, it appears to be a multifactorial disease, in which the following factors play an important role: environmental, immunological, hereditary, disruption of the architecture of the skin barrier.
In infancy and childhood it is usually found on the face and skin folds in front of the elbows and behind the knees, while later it can be found all over the body. It is accompanied by a strong feeling of itching and therefore patients have a decrease in their quality of life.
The treatment of atopic dermatitis focuses on the relief of itching and dry skin, but also the avoidance of exacerbations that often accompany atopic dermatitis and is completely personalized for each patient.
